DOR/POF and early menopause

Idk if anyone else has any experience with this that has been diagnosed with POF/DOR. I looked up symptoms of early menopause and I have a lot of them. The biggest ones being fatigue and decreased libido. I know these can be symptoms of other things but combined with all the other symptoms it seems like early menopause to me. It makes sense that POF can cause early menopause because the ovaries are older than your body. I've always wondered about a hormone imbalance but the reason I thought about it today is because I started spotting today. I'm not supposed to get my period for another week. I usually have shorter cycles because I O on cd 11. My LP are usually 14 days. I'm thinking the spotting is due to low progesterone. And I have REALLY heavy periods, which can be another symptom of early menopause. I would so love to have a hysterectomy because my uterus has caused me so much pain and problems. If God was going to give me reproductive organs he could've made them functional, instead they give me nothing but problems. I've talked to DH about it and we are trying to figure who the best person is to see. My regular ob/gyn can be hot and cold. It depends how busy she is if she wants to take the time to talk. I might go see another ob/gyn in the practice that isn't as busy. My DH runs into at another clinic and he might bring it up to him to see if it's something he wants to check out and can treat. I told him to start the conversation with "she has DOR/POF and has failed 3 IVF cycles." Not "she's 29 and has these symptoms" because then he would say it's not hormones. Sorry for the book.

I have had early menopause symptoms for almost 2 years. Went to many doctors and most of them thought I was a hypochondriac. I had fatigue, decreased/NO libido, hot flashes, gained weight uncontrollably, painful and long periods, 45-60 day cycles, joint pain. My labs were fine and everyone was just thinking I was crazy. Then I asked my PCP to run an entire BW panel. She totally freaked out because TSH , T3, T4 everything was high. She asked me to see a endocrinologist asap. I researched endocrinologists in the area and found a really good one. When I called for an appointment they told me there was a 4 month wait for a new patient. I persisted to call every day until about 3 weeks later they had a cancellation and I was in. The scariest thing was when he told me he did not know what was wrong with me. We did a lot of testing (radioactive iodine/ultrasounds/MRI of my pituitary) and he was still unsure what was happening. Then he said he thought that it was autoimmune. After about a year of adjusting synthroid dosage and being checked on monthly basis he finally diagnosed me with autoimmune Hashimoto's and Graves. Now I go for a recheck every 3 months and my dosage has been consistent for a year. Sorry for a long answer but I'd have your thyroid and pituitary glands checked out asap.

Thanks for your response! I think I had a mini-meltdown yesterday because of the early spotting and made a bigger deal of it than it really was. Of course, when you google early menopause you can make yourself have every symptom since they are all so vague. After thinking about it I think my fatigue may be more just boredom. I sit at home by myself all day and look around and see there is nothing to be done so I sit and do nothing. When I find something to do I have no problem doing it. When DH is home we get a lot of accomplished and work hard. I hate to c/o about being bored. I also think once the weather gets a little nicer and summer comes I'll have more energy.

I talked to DH about everything and he thinks I just need a good physical with bloodwork. I've had my thyroid checked and it was all fine. We thought that may have been a culprit a while back. I could have DH order all these blood tests but then if they do come back abnormal, he doesn't want to treat it or figure out who I should see so we'll just start with an ob/gyn.

I am really considering getting an ablation. I just want my periods gone. They are so heavy and I get horrible cramps. Of the two ppl I've talked to that has had it done they said they wish they would've done it sooner. Maybe just having lighter periods/no period would help with some of my symptoms.

Off to make an appt with the ob/gyn!

I don't really have any advice since I'm not 100% sure what exactly I have. But I do have big hugs over your situation. I'm happy that you are being proactive about your health and I wish you the best of luck. For what it's worth - you have been since an inspiration for me to get healthy - mentally and physically. T&Ps!

I have an appt tomorrow morning with the gyn.

I am a total hypochondriac and worry about everything with my health. I think I always have some type of cancer. My worries over my health are MUCH worse when I'm anxious. I'm so happy DH is a physician otherwise I think I'd be uninsurable because I'd always be at the doctor. My DH does a really good job reassuring me.

I had my doc appt this morning. I really liked my new ob/gyn. He really sat down with me and took his time. I didn't feel like he was rushed at all. He went over the different options to treat the hormone imbalance/PMS and heavy periods. He said he could do the ablation and that will improve my periods but it won't help the hormone imbalance. I had actually thought of that. Another option was BCP. I was hesitant of that option because I didn't tolerate well and I'm worried about wt. gain. He said I had breakthrough bleeding last time because the hormone levels were too low. Another option was Mirena IUD. That would stop my periods but wouldn't help the hormone imbalance since it's a localized hormone, and not going through my body systemically. We decided on the BCP. I did notice last time I was on them it did help my headaches and my moods. He started me on a different BCP than what I was on before. He told me to keep taking them and not take the placebo pills so I won't get a period. I'll go back for a f/u in 8 wks to see if there is an improvement. If there isn't a ton of improvement in my mood then he'll start a low dose anti-depressant. I'm not even googling the BCP I'm going to take because then I'll be real worried about side effects. He said the wt gain is low. I never gained wt on any of my IVF meds, I actually lost wt and I think I lost wt the last time I was on BCP. I could actually stand to gain a couple pounds, but I'm too scared to. So I feel really good after talking to him.

I'm so glad that it was a helpful appointment. It sounds like it a plan with which you are at peace. Good luck with the adjustment and I hope that this it what you need to get things leveled out for you.

I'm a lot late to respond to this, but I'm glad you seem to have found a good resolution. I haven't been officially dx with DOR, even though my AMH is low (.89), but I have a lot of those same symptoms you've described. Makes me wonder if it's a little of that along with endometriosis. I hope the BCP works for you. I plan on going right onto BCP after I have another child, or if we are done trying. I despise the heavy periods. It's totally not worth suffering through. I hope it goes well and you have minimal side effects. Let us know how it's going!

I'm betting I have endo also. My RE said he could do a lap to check but it wouldn't affect the chances of me getting pregnant with IVF so I didn't do it.

I'm so glad I went to the doc when I did since I got AF on Saturday. I started my pills last night. Had I waited a week or so I'd have to go through another cycle before starting. On Saturday we had a formal event to go to and I felt pretty miserable with cramps and bloating. Of course, it had to come the day I had that planned. Do PMS symptoms get worse when you start going through menopause? I am just miserable when I get my period. This cycle was probably my shortest cycle I've ever had. It was only 22 days. My doc did say that I'm ovulating some months and probably not other months.

I'm sorry to hear of all you are going through Meg. *Hugs* I'm glad you have been able to talk to a dr and start a treatment protocol. I hope the bcp's help. I unfortunately don't have any answers to your questions.

I too am having issues. I'm seeing a dr tomorrow morning. I haven't had a full af since June. I've had spotting. I had a full week of spotting in both January and February. And I've had a day of spotting here and there throughout the past 8 months. I'm having symptoms and not sure if it's early menopause or what is causing them. I've had fatigue and sore joints but that seems to have gotten better since I started taking vitamin supplements with extra magneseum and calcium. I've had alot of cramping, like I feel as though af will show up any time. I've had the odd hot flash. I have really tender breasts too. I was having issues with dry patches on my face, but that has been cleared up since I switched to a new facial treatment line back in November. I find every 4-6 weeks I get PMS-like symptoms, overly emotional and food cravings. I haven't noticed any changes in my libido, which I'm very thankful for. I'm just lost and unsure what to do at this point. I'm afraid it's going to be recommended I go on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) but I'm really not ready to do that.

This all sucks!! I feel your frustration and pain Meg. *Hugs*

Sorry you are going through this also. My face is so crazy. I have the dry patches also so I use a good moisturizer, but then it's greasy as heck. The last year or so my skin has become so sensitive. The dry patches are the worst. I get them down on my chin and they look awful. Sometimes I get them under my eyes. What are you using for your face?

I've also noticed I have a lot more anxiety. Like this morning I had a mini anxiety attack over nothing. I felt all weird, dizzy, shaky and nauseous and like I couldn't take a deep breath in. I played the piano some since that always helps with my anxiety. I've always been a little uptight/anxious but not this bad.

I feel so bad for DH since NO libido is my biggest symptom. I'm hoping these BCP help me out.

You'll have to let me know what your doctor says and recommends. Good luck tomorrow

I use Arbonne RE9 formula.

I basically had some bloodwork done and we'll go from there. It was a good appointment overall, just not much that's helpful I can share really. I'm seeing a new RE for a second opinion. He needs to wait for my charts to arrive from my previous clinic. Unfortunately he didn't have them so there was only so much we could talk about. I'm not sure if we're going to go the donor route and without past history (labs etc) he was only able to go by what I was able to share. So at this point we're sorta starting from scratch. He ran the AMH test (something I've never had before). I'll have a follow-up with him after all my information comes in. He wants to do an u/s then too. He did say that it sounds to him like my POF is advancing quickly. Sad I went from having and IUI in Feb/2010 (slow to respond but had 2 follicles) to being diagnosed with POF after my FSH came back at 50 in March/2010, to 14 months of irregular cycles, to my last af being in June/2011, it just stopped. So today we really just got the ball rolling. I didn't know he didn't have my charts until I got there.

I hope the bcp's will help restore your libido. I don't know about you, but losing my libido and dealing with vaginal dryness are my two biggest fears of POF.

That's too bad your new RE didn't have your records to review. I'm glad he did order some tests for you and will review them with you when they get back.

Yep, I've lost my libido and have vaginal dryness and it sucks. Those are probably the worst symptoms. I do remember when I was on BCP a few months ago that I didn't have as much vaginal dryness.

My FSH was never extremely high but based on my poor response I was dx with it. I don't know if I was ever "officially" diagnosed. When I had my FSH checked (the one and only time) it was 8. But my E2 was 98. So my E2 could've been making my FSH look lower than it was. My AMH was 1.9. That was nothing my RE ordered. Actually he didn't order any of the tests. After my 2nd IVF cycle I had my DH call my ob/gyn and ask if she could order FSH, E2 and AMH for me. When I asked my RE about it he said there was no point since it was pretty obvious. Yeah...he was an a**.

My last RE turned out to be an a** as well! Sad It's so disappointing and frustrating! I am hopeful the bcp's help you Meg. *HUGS* Before March 2010 my FSH was always low as well, but my E2 was always high... so that was likely giving us false readings as well. I wish my previous RE had done more investigative tests on me in regards to my ovarian reserve before moving on to IVF. But I can't change the past, can only move forward.
