    Default Great News--First RE visit

Our first visit with the RE today went VERY well. Due to DHs hx of low sperm count, we were fully prepared to discuss IVF and begin treatment asap. However, after getting DHs newest SA results, his numbers have improved drastically (from 4-8mil to 30mil), and our RE believes we have high chances of conceiving via IUI!

Plan is on CD 11 he wants me to begin OPKs, once I get a positive, we have to haul booty up to his office (1 1/2hr away) and undergo ultrasound, blood work, sperm sample, sperm "wash" process, and IUI! At this point, based on my cycles, he doesn't feel that we need to stimulate the ovaries at all... not sure about this... but I trust him. He has been doing this for a bazillion years, and I feel like with our long infertility hx, he wouldn't suggest it if he didn't feel it would work... He would like to try this 3-4 cycles, and if no success, we'll move on to IVF. He did discuss IVF with us, but it was brief, and he only did so because he knew we had driven quite a ways...

He did say that if we have a failed cycle, he wants to proceed with an HSG and if all clear, will try another cycle with Clomid.

Both DH and I feel very good about this! Excited and optimistic!

Seeing as the HSG actually improves fertility for at least a month if not more after treatment, if you need it, look at it as part of the process. We ended up doing 4 cycles of IUI and then IVF. We also had male factor. With the length of time it took us to conceive I was happy to move along to IVF. Of course, having a successful IUI would have been awesome.

TIffany, if you don't mind me asking, what were your DHs #'s? Like I said in my first post, DHs #'s were between 4-8 million about 4yrs ago... everything was low... took a hiatus, made some changes (no caffeine, quit cycling, added vitamins, etc), 4yrs later we're up to 30 million. Motility is the problem now... only 6% (15% is normal--in case you didn't already know ).

Our RE was super impressed with the numbers, and kept saying "I feel very hopeful with these results." I don't want to be naive, I know there is always that chance that we won't have success with the IUIs and he said as much... but I am trying to be optimistic too... Agggh!

That's great that you are able to try IUI first. We did 3 cycles of IUI for MFI before moving onto IVF. Our RE wanted us to go straight to IVF because of DH's SA but we felt we should try IUI first. The cost of IUI was sooo much cheaper than IVF (we were paying 100% OOP) and if it didn't work, then we knew we tried everything before doing IVF. My RE did the HSG before IUI. If there was a blockage, the IUI would have minimal benefit. That's great that DH's numbers improved so much.
