Default Intro and a few questions...

    Hello ladies....

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Jina and my Hubby and I have been trying to have a baby for about 2 years. We are able to get pregnant on our own but unfortunately they don't stick. I've had 3 miscarriages and a CP in the last year and a half. I started seeing my RE a few month ago and after a whole battery of tests the only thing that came up was that I have a single copy of MTHFR (blood clotting disorder). Though, because my homocysteine levels were low instead of high, the Hematologist doesn't believe this is the cause of my losses ( I say BS!). I'm on baby aspirin, 5.25mg folic acid, 1000 mcg of B12 and 50mg of B6 as a precaution.

Even though I O on my own, my RE thought that I would benefit from Clomid and Femara since I have really long cycles. She also wanted to give me "better" eggs to work with. Well, we tried one cycle with Clomid and it was a bust. We tried again with Femara and it was a bust as well. Instead of trying again with meds or moving on to IUI, we have decided to pursue IVF with PGD.

Okay, now for my questions. What can I expect from my first appointment?

I've already had a lot of tests done like, an HSG (normal), AMH (6.3), Thyroid (5), Genetic tests on both Hubby and I (all fine), Karyotyping on Hubby and I (normal)....and a whole bunch of other tests as well. Hubby hasn't had a SA done yet but I'm sure he'll get one in 2 weeks. Should we expect more tests?

How soon can I expect to get the ball rolling after the initial consult? Is it weeks or months? I know my RE will go over everything with us but I'm pretty anxious about this whole process.

Also, are there any questions I should ask my RE? Am I missing anything important?

Thanks in advance for any information or insight you can give me. I hope to get to know you ladies and hopefully we can all support each other on this journey.

Welcome! Big hugs for your trials thus far. It sounds like you have you had most of the ground work laid already. I would suggest bringing a notebook to write down anything the RE says that you think might be important. You will get a lot of information thrown at you and if you are like me, might get overwhelmed. You can also write down any questions you might think of for the RE between now and then. As for the timeline, every RE is different. I spent at least a month on BCP to regulate my cycle before I even started my injectibles (at least 2 weeks of those). When you've waited so long already, an extra month or two can seem like torture but once you get started with things, time flies by. Good luck on your journey and KUP!

Welcome. I'm so sorry for your losses It does sound like you already have the routine tests done for IVF so you are at a good starting point. Are you using the same RE for IVF as you did for the clomid? Some clinics have different policies as far as cycling. Some clinics cycle ppl at a specific time and some cycle them whenever. I'd maybe ask what protocl they are thinking of using. Are they going to start you on Lovenox to help prevent losses? I'd say you could get started in the next few months since you have everything pretty much done. PP had a good idea by taking in a notebook to write things down because it's a lot to process. I left my initial consult so stressed and with the biggest headache and all we had talked about was Clomid and IUI. Write down the questions you want to ask also. It never fails for me. I have questions, I get there and get nervous and forget what I was going to ask.

Good luck to you. We are here for you and feel free to ask any question, voice any concerns or just vent.

    Thanks Jenni and Meg!

I will definitely make sure to take a notepad full of questions....I also suffer from temporary amnesia as soon as I walk into a Dr.'s office.

I will be seeing the same RE for IVF. I really love her and she seems very open to whatever I want to do and I really appreciate that. I guess I'm just nervous because I have no clue how everthing will go down. 2 weeks seems like a life time away....I just hope our insurance cooperates!

ETA - I'm not sure about the Lovenox. I'm going to have to ask my RE about it. The Hemalologist didn't think it was neccessary but I'm not so sure....

Thanks again for the support. I will KUP!

Another quick question - do you ladies know if there are any guarantees? Like, what happens if I do get a bfp but I m/c? Or if the cycle doesn't produce a bfp?

Sorry for so many questions....I need to calm down a little bit!

Welcome Jina! I am really sorry about the losses you suffered. You did have a lot of tests done so far, but as far as how long before the process starts I think it differs from person to person. It also depends on protocol they will use. I waited 4 cycles, one because it was around christmas and my clinic does not start cycles around that time. As far as guarantee is concerned I can pretty much say there is none. There are shared risk programs for self-pay patients, also some clinics might offer bundled cycles (buy one, get one 50% off plus all subsequent FET) but there is a certain criteria you have to fall in to be able to get that. Does your insurance cover IVF? I suggest you call your benefits coordinator and find out that way there are no surprises.
I wish you good luck and hope that your stay here is short and sweet I am starting my first IVF cycle and will share a lot of my woes and concerns here.

Mimi, thanks for the welcome! Yes, my insurance does cover IVF but I don't know the specifics. I guess I'm just afraid that they'll have me jump through hoops in order to qualify for IVF and at this point I just want to get the show on the road. Hubby and I are willing to pay out of pocket if necessary but of course would strongly prefer not to! Anyway, thanks again for the info and support. Congrats on starting your first IVF cycle! How exciting....I will definitely send lots of positive thoughts your way! Good luck!
