Snacking On Walnuts May Increase Sperm Quality

Scientists have known for a while now that food can have a positive impact on a couple's ability to conceive. Many studies have looked at how specific diets can increase the chance of pregnancy. One in particular recently looked at walnuts, which are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Walnuts Are Great for Men

According to a study published in the journal Biology of Reproduction, men who consumed 75 grams of walnuts per day improved the motility, energy and structure of their sperm. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles recruited more than 100 men between the ages of 21 and 35, who either ate walnuts on a daily basis or did not consume the nuts at all.

"We found a significant improvement in sperm parameters in the group that consumed the walnuts," said Wendie Robbins, the lead author of the study. "The men who ate no tree nuts saw no change."

Infertility Is Not Just a Woman's Problem

Males are the cause of roughly one-third of all infertility cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The condition can occur for a variety of reasons, including poor sperm movement and low production rate. In addition, many factors can decrease the overall viability of sperm, such as alcohol and tobacco use, drugs, age, medicines, health problems, environmental toxins and radiation treatment.

The scientists behind the research now have evidence that eating walnuts can improve the quality of sperm. However, they need to conduct additional studies to look at how diet modification affects couples who are specifically accessing fertility clinics in order to conceive.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Have Many Benefits

Besides walnuts, other great sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil supplements, flaxseed and salmon. This beneficial lipid can also help lower high blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, as reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center.
