QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,

I have several questions about types of exercises can be safely done on an exercise ball in pregnancy.

Is it safe to put my tummy on the big ball to do exercises during the 1st Trimester?

I understand side crunches can be done on big ball during pregnancy. How about twisting of spine with legs on the ball (knees bent) while lying on a mat?

How Will Pregnancy Affect Workout Routine for Sychronized Swimmer?

QUESTION

I'm a competitive synchronized swimming coach and I found out today that one of the elite athletes I coach is 12 weeks pregnant. She's 20 years old, has always been diagnosed as somewhat underweight and under-muscled, and says she intends to continue university and her training.

Luckily her family will support her in this, and she will be able to keep her scholarship if she continues training, even if she misses a few minor competitions.

Can I Teach Aqua Boot Camp Through My Pregnancy?

Alexandra Powell Allred's picture

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
I am 5 weeks pregnant and teach an Aqua Boot Camp class three mornings a week for an hour. The class includes 5-7 minutes of warm-up, 40 minutes of hi/low intensity exercises, 3-5 minutes of abs, and 10 minutes of cool-down/stretching. We burn about 700 calories during the class.

I drink water throughout class and am able talk throughout the class. Is it safe to continue teaching and is there a time during the pregnancy that I will have to decrease my intensity level?

Thanks for your help!

Weight Loss During Pregnancy

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
I'm 26 years old and 6 months pregnant with my first child. I have gained 25 pounds in the past 6 months. I'm 5'9 and approximately 230 pounds.

I was a bit overweight before I got pregnant and I am having so much trouble trying to exercise. I can't keep up, I get tired too quickly, and can't breath. I used to belly dance and Irish dance for 12 years before I got pregnant so I'm used to being fit, though I've never been "tiny."

I am really concerned that I'm not going to bounce back after pregnancy.
