Strained Intercostal Muscles and Pregnant

Alexandra Powell Allred's picture

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
It seems I have badly strained my intercostal muscles on my right side. The soreness and pain can be pretty excruciating at times particularly when sneezing (felt an actual pop in that area tonight), coughing, and when swimming (I had to give up my 8 miles/week when I had pain when breathing). I want to get back to it slowly but this pain will not subside at all. Each sneeze makes it worse and sleeping stiffens me up.

Fitness During a High Risk Pregnancy

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
I am about six to seven weeks pregnant. I am experiencing bleeding though my doctor says my baby is ok. But because of the continuous bleeding, she asked me to stop all my workouts. Though I was not professional athlete before pregnancy, I was swimming and weight training about 5 times a week. I feel a bit depressed that I am not able to work out.

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
My name is Lili and about six years ago you interviewed me for your book, Entering the Mother Zone. I was one of the "less famous" mothers that was working out with Dr. Barbara Bergman in Columbus, OH. I enjoyed your book very much and referred to it often.

I just wanted to give you an update and let you know that after several years collecting dust under a bed, I have finally pulled your book out again for motivation. After the "textbook" pregnancy you wrote about in the book, I had six more pregnancies -- all ending in miscarriage.

Overweight, Antidepressants and TTC: Fitness tips?

Alexandra Powell Allred's picture

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
To give you a little history about myself, 2 years ago I tried to become pregnant. I succeeded, but unfortunately lost the baby at 3 months due to Turner Syndrome. I am trying again.

I am 5'7 ½" tall and weigh 245. I take antidepressants called Lexapro. I was told by my Ob/gyn to switch over to Prozac at 20mg. per day. I am concerned about both issues of being overweight and the antidepressant. I am currently trying to lose weight, it's just a battle for me.

Do you have any information on these topics for me?

Thanks a lot.
