Do These Cause Birth Defects?

Kimberly A. Tessmer's picture

I am almost 2 months pregnant. I am completely thrilled, but also terrified. I am 34 years old, a bit overweight, and this will be our first child. It seems that everything I touch, someone has to tell me it causes birth defects or going to cause me to miscarry. This site seems very reliable to answer questions, so please help me understand!

QUESTION

Dear Nutritionist,
I was wondering if there are certain foods and vitamins to help conceive. I have two healthy boys. After having my boys I was on birth control for two years. First I tried the pill and that got me sick then I went on the shot for about 9 months and then took my self off the shot to try the patch so that I could get pregnant right away when were ready. The patch only lasted a day because it got me really sick. I took it off the second day.

QUESTION

Dear Nutritionist,
Hello. I'm a 28-year-old who recently found out she was (unexpectedly) pregnant. I realize I'm a little behind the power curve, but I have every incentive now to improve my health. My diet is varied and I eat lots of fruits/vegetables/nuts/lean meats. I just haven't been disciplined enough to limit my portion sizes.

Weight Gain During Pregnancy?

QUESTION

Dear Nutritionist,
I am 26 years old and 17 weeks pregnant with my first baby. In the first trimester I lost 9 pounds due to not feeling well and lack of appetite. Since about week 13 my appetite has better, but I have still only gained 2 of the lbs back.

How quickly should I be gaining and do you suggest any certain foods to help? I have added a boost supplement daily and try to eat a well balanced diet with many snacks in between my meals. My doctor checked my thyroid levels which were normal.
