16 and In Need of Advice

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I am 16 and concerned. I got my period on January 4th (which is normal time) and it ended on the 10th. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on January 27th and he thinks he may have ejaculated inside of me. On January 28th, I got my period again. Is this weird? Could I be pregnant?

ps. I am not on birth control or any contraceptive.

ANSWER

If your period was normal in length and strength, then you are not pregnant. If you have a 28 day cycle, ovulation would have occurred about Jan 14th, so if the 27th was the first time you had intercourse that cycle, it is very unlikely that you are pregnant.

However, if you are not ready to get married, pay the bills, and support a child, then it might be time to consider good, reliable contraception, and insist that your partner use condoms also. Both male and female methods have a failure rate (though small), so it is best to use two methods each time.
