Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
My lmp was 11/26/2008 and had a positive hpt on December 14 which would put me at 3 wks 6 days (my cycles are only 21 days).
I went to the doctor yesterday for my first visit and I am measuring 4 weeks and 6 days gestational sac with no yolk sac or fetal pole. From what I have read, it is common not to see either of these at this stage. The nurse practitioner seemed to think I would miscarry due to the fact the could not see the yolk sac and I should prepare for the worst.
I have another ultrasound scheduled for two weeks on January 6. I just wanted to see if this sounded correct or if it is too early.
I have had three very early miscarriages prior to this (no sac present ever and bleeding by 4 weeks)and have a 5 year old daughter.
Thanks for any input you have.
At 4weeks 6 days you would not see anything on an ultrasound yet as far as a gestational sac. You will see thickening of the uterine lining and maybe a speck which would be the gestational sac starting.
I personally do not like ultrasounds done this early. There is really no reason for such an early look. These always cause a Mommy to be anxiety because nothing is seen. Unless there is a problem, I think waiting until at least 6-7 weeks will give you a solid answer one way or another.
I feel it was premature for anyone to say "you are going to miscarry," this early. In a case like yours I always like women to stay hopeful and optimistic until you get to a stage in the pregnancy that they can confirm viability.
