Dear Ms Ultrasound,
About two weeks before I found out I was pregnant I dreamed that I had twin boys. I just woke up knowing I had two boys, but I didn't know I was pregnant, wasn't trying, figured "not me", but it was a weird; like I knew.
Anyway; I found out I was pregnant and by dates I was about 6 weeks. But my levels were 61,000 and I have twins in my family. Two days later they had me go in for an ultrasound.
At my doctor's appointment 2 weeks later, I was told there was a shadow on the ultrasound and that there was probably a twin that didn't make it and was re-absorbed.
I had a second ultrasound at 12 weeks and it showed nothing. Was it totally absorbed? Could one be hiding? There is only one heartbeat (about 150).
Is this normal? What is it called?
It is not uncommon for a woman to conceive twins and only have one survive. Many years ago, with the advent of high resolution ultrasound, we discovered that this was a lot more common then we knew.
You had a head start on the ultrasound. In my book on dreams and pregnancy, I call it God's Ultrasound. A glimpse into your pregnancy through a dream. What a blessing! Both your boys communicated with you. I believe that a soul decides it is not ready to be born yet when a gestational sac stops growing.
When a second gestational sac stops growing, it is absorbed. The other baby goes on to full term. There cannot be a baby hiding. Two babies at 12 weeks are quite obvious.Your baby's heartbeat is wonderful and shows that it is well within normal parameters.
Please let me know when you find out the sex of your baby. I would love the statistics for my book.
