Cytoxin and Pregnancy

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I just found out yesterday that I'm pregnant and have been on Cytoxin. How much harm can this do to the fetus. I've been told by my Lupus doctor to terminate this pregnancy but it's not in me to do that. What or how can I find out about the Cytoxin effects on fetus?

ANSWER

Cytoxan is pregnancy category D, so not the most dangerous category (X) but definitely not good. Drugs in this category have been known to cause birth defects and/or miscarriages in humans. If you choose not to terminate the pregnancy, you will probably be given extra ultrasounds and possibly additional testing to assure that your baby is ok.

Good luck, and I'm sorry you had to be taking the medication in the first place.
