Does a Previous C-section Affect Exercise?

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
Can I use bike while I'm pregnant?

Another question about my pregnancy -- it is my second pregnancy only 8 month after the first delivery. That was c-section. Is there any danger?

ANSWER

Yes, biking is a great way to stay in shape and build strong muscles while pregnant. However, we prefer it if you ride a stationary bike. While you might be an excellent cyclist, there are outside factors you cannot control such as rain [wet streets], cars or a dog chasing after your tire that can cause accidents and possibly harm you/baby.

Be sure to talk to your doctor to get permission to ride bikes. Because we do not know your medical history, you need to make sure your doctor is okay with your exercise routine. In regards to your C-section, again -- speak with your doctor. But in most cases, there is absolutely no danger and you should not worry. Although it is very soon after having your first baby, exercise and proper diet will make you feel stronger and happier as you move along in your pregnancy. Be sure to read our information about inner core temperature and be sure you do not get too hot while working out. If you are able, we strongly advise working with a personal trainer to set up a safe/good workout routine that includes proper stretching, weight lifting and cycling.

Good luck.
