Early Period, am I Pregnant?

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I am 23 years old. I have always had a regular 26-27 day cycle. On January 11th I started my period as usual. It last 2-3 days. No different than any other time. Before then and after my period my boyfriend (of 8 years) and I had unprotected sex several times over the weeks. We aren't trying to conceive but if we got pregnant we would be ecstatic.

Just this past Saturday (1/24) I started spotting brown blood and it had a mucus substance to it. On Sunday it turned into a full out period. Today, Tuesday (1/27) it has seemed to stop but I am having a bit of clear discharge. I am not due for my period until 2/6/09, give or take a day. Could there be a chance of pregnancy? I took a HPT yesterday and it was negative. Would it still be too early for it to read right?

I just so happen to have my annual exam with my OB/GYN in 3 days and I will inquire about this then but until that time I am sitting here puzzled and wondering what I should prepare myself for. Any advice? Thank you.

ANSWER

It sounds like you may have already had your exam, but I would have said that if you miss your period, then you should repeat the pregnancy test, just to be sure.
