First Trimester and Bleeding

QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I want to know what the earliest that I can get a ultrasound. I am 5wks 5 days, and I am bleeding. I have a history of molar pregnancy.

ANSWER

Hello
A gestational sac with a very small fetal pole should be seen by 6 weeks. The imaging should be done with a vaginal probe. The vaginal probe has much higher resolution capabilities and can see cardiac activity before 6 weeks.

As far as I know a molar pregnancy does not put you at any increased risk for another molar pregnancy.
