QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
It's been 7 years since I had my second child which was a c-section (my first was vaginal.

What are the risks of having a vbac with the third one, also I'm dealing with gestational diabetes.

Would it be safer to just have a c-section?

ANSWER

I haven't seen either you or your chart, so I couldn't say for sure.

To answer generally (not for you specifically), a vaginal birth is less dangerous than a cesarean, and definitely than a second cesarean. I would think you would be a good candidate for a vbac if you watch your weight and blood sugars, and have a healthy pregnancy. You might want to visit ican-online.org for more information that might help you make your decision.

Remember that many doctors find it easier and quicker to do a cesarean than a vaginal birth, so you might have to do some interviewing if you do decide on a vbac.
