Is It Twins

QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I had an ultrasound on Feb. 19th, 09 to confirm pregnancy and measured 4 weeks and 6 days.

The u/s tech that did my ultrasound told me the baby activity was at the bottom of the gestational sac where the white color was, but she said she forgot her glasses and couldn't see well since I was early.

But on the u/s I can clearly see two half circles that look like two different yolk sacs. Is it just me or could there possibly be two?

Thank you.

ANSWER

Hello
I'm a little surprised that a Sonographer went ahead and actually did a scan without her glasses. Regardless of that, in a normal gestational sac, a fetal pole will be present and also a yolk sac. If there were two yolks sacs you would see two complete circles. I am going to guess the image you see is a part of the yolk sac and the fetal pole.

I HOPE a Sonographer would never miss twins, with or without her glasses!
