Itching in Late Pregnancy

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
Please help! I am 36 weeks and 6 days pregnant with my fourth child. I believe I am in labor because I have been contracting for 2 days now every 15-20 minutes.

I suddenly started itching tonight starting with the tops of my feet and now covering pretty much my whole body. I have not broken out or anything, just severe itching that I cant control. I am not able to sleep or even relax, it is so uncomfortable. Is this due to me being pregnant, in labor or just plain weird?

Thank you,
Amoree

ANSWER

No, there are a couple of late-pregnancy conditions that can cause the itching. It should be reported to your care provider who can run some tests to see what it is, and then depending, give you options for treatment.
