Level 2 Ultrasound

QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I went for an ultrasound today..The doctor said the baby looked fine, had a good heartbeat, and the spine looked good..The only thing is he couldn't see the internal organs.

Should I be worried about anything?. He is sending me for a level 2 ultrasound. Is that alot better?

ANSWER

Hello, If the doctor could not see the internal organs it seems there may be a problem like equipment that lacks sophistication. If the baby is alive there are internal organs. There are certain problems a fetus may have where the organs are on the outside of the body. It does not sound like this is a problem your baby has as it is quite easy to see the organs on the outside of the fetus. The best bet is to have a level II ultrasound done by a licensed Sonographer. You will have all your answers after the level II ultrasound. For now I would not worry.
