Lower Abdominal Pain: Should I Worry?

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I'm 39 years old and 9 weeks pregnant. I keep getting a cramp-like pain in my lower abdomen as if I'm about to start a monthly cycle.

I'm just wondering if this is normal at my age or if I need to visit my doctor.

ANSWER

If you do not have any bleeding, it is probably ok. In a week or two, your provider will be able to hear a heartbeat with a doppler, and that should reassure you that everything is ok.
