QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I am 28 weeks, 4 days pregnant. Last night the baby started moving very strangely and it was extremely painful.

He carried on doing this for about 45 minutes and then balled up. It really hurt, and I of course started to panic. I almost went to the hospital, but as I was preparing to go, the pain subsided and the baby seemed to relax a bit. All of this was followed by a couple hours of contractions (3 or 4 an hour).

I got off my feet and laid in bed on a left side with a pillow between my legs. I also drank a ton of water. This morning, the baby has been moving some, but it is painful again. Do you have any recommendations for me? Is this normal? I'm really worrying about this and I know that is not helping. Thanks so much!

ANSWER

From what you describe it is possible that your baby was breech and is trying to turn himself around the right way. If so, you did exactly the right thing by making a bigger "swimming pool" by loading up on water, and relaxing so as not to get in his way. I would suggest reporting all this at your next visit, but as long as your baby is moving and you have not been told that there is anything unusual with your pregnancy, it doesn't sound worrisome to me. Just very annoying, right?
