QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
Hi, My name is Heather. I am pregnant with my second child, due mid July. I just found out this last weekend that 2 years ago I had a positive MRSA infection. The Hospital that treated it did not inform me until this weekend when I had to go in to The hospitals birthing center due to having a lot of braxton hick contractions.

The nurse taking care of me asked if I had ever had an infected open wound treated there I told her yes and she told me that it tested positive for MRSA. I know what it is, several in my family work in the health field. My Question is how can this affect my pregnancy and birth and most importantly my child.

ANSWER

If it was two years ago and you were treated and there has been no recurrence, I don't see how it could make a difference.

Pregnancy tends to decrease the effectiveness of the immune system, and if MRSA were still in your system, I suppose you might have another wound (unlikely after this long), which of course you would have treated promptly, right? So no worries.
