Placenta Previa; Brown Discharge Near Delivery. Why?

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I'm 31 weeks pregnant. I have complete Placenta Previa. I'm 35 years old and this is my first pregnancy. I had leep surgery last year.I had a gush of blood run down my legs 3 days ago. I went to the hospital, but the bleeding stopped, so I was sent home. The baby is in the breech position. I have been having a brown discharge since. What could cause that at this late stage? I have also been experiencing cramping by my vagina. I haven't been sleeping well either. Looking forward to your feedback.

Thanks,
RGS

ANSWER

The brown discharge is dried blood from your bleed 3 days ago that is gradually making its way out. It sounds like you may be getting close to the time to deliver. If you have any more bright red bleeding, I'd suggest a quick trip to the hospital.
