QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I am a 40 year old woman... I had a period on 6/23. On 6/25, my period was basically over and I slept with Man #1. He did not ejaculate in me. On 7/21 I had a (light) period. From that date forward I had several sexual encounters with Man #2 (including the fertile period around August 2 & 3). I missed my period completely on 8/18. I took a home pregnancy test on 8/26 and it was positive.

I went to the doctor on 9/4/08 and he did an intravaginal ultrasound that dated the pregnancy at 6 weeks and 4 days with a due date of 4/28/08. I had another intravaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks and 6 days which agreed with the initial ultrasound. I had an abdominal ultrasound at 10 weeks which also agreed with these dates. At 13 & 18 weeks I had 3D ultrasounds which once again agrees with my due dates (they changed it to 4/27/08 at my 13 week ultrasound). I went in on Monday for my 28 weeks 3D ultrasound. I was exactly 28 weeks and 0 days during this ultrasound. The doctore measured the femur bone and the weight and said that the baby is measuring 29 weeks and 5 days. The baby already weighs 3 pounds and 5 ounces!!! Huge!!!

So, finally... my question... Why is the date off now? Could my due date be off and I am further along then I thought? want to make absolutely 100% sure that this pregnancy did not occur from the 6/25/08 encounter. I am with Man #2 and I had felt confident based on all of these dates and tests that Man # 2 is the father, but with this last ultrasound discrepancy, I would love some re-assurance! Thank you. Have a nice day!

ANSWER

Hello, I have read about all of your ultrasound dates and conception possibilities. I am confident that Man #2 is the father of your baby. Please know that the early ultrasound dates are the most accurate! They will never be off more than a few days one way or another. As the pregnancy grows the ultrasound dating methods can be up to two weeks off and still be normal. This dating discrepancy in the later stages of pregnancy, does not change your due date or how far along you are. You will still be due on the original date set from your earlier ultrasound and the conception possibility will be the one set from the earlier ultrasounds.

Of course without me personally seeing all the exams or doing the ultrasounds myself I cannot say for 100%, but from what you have told me, you can relax and embrace Man #2 Smile

With Regards,
