Positive Hpt, Negative Test at Doctors

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I had a positive hpt. Three to four days later I had a negative urine test at a free clinic. The counselor stated that it could be from drinking so much water.

My last period was Dec 30th - Jan 3rd . I have been tired & nauseated. Just feeling sick to my stomach like I'm going to throw up but never do. I've lost a little weight and my stomach is round.

Please help. I really think I'm pregnant. Could this be all in my head? Just confused being that the first test was positive. This is would be our first and my husband is excited. I hate to tell him it was a false positive!! What should I do??

ANSWER

It may not have been a false positive. The free clinic may have been wrong or your pregnancy may not have "taken" and implanted properly.

I'd suggest investing in a good quality home pregnancy test and checking again according to the directions. If you are still pregnant, it will definitely come up positive.
