QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
Hello. I'm 29+3 with severe IUGR - to date, reason unknown. I am receiving twice-weekly CTGs and regular scans to monitor my little girl's progress. I am due to see my Obstetrician on Friday morning where I expect to be referred for my next scan, sometime next week.

Since about 4mths pregnant I have had constipation for a few days followed by diarrhea for one. This had not been a concern until now. For 3 days I have had persistent diarrhea, usually within 30 minutes of a small meal. I have constant nausea and stomach cramping which is distracting me from monitoring my baby's movements. I'm am utterly exhausted.

I have spoken to a midwife at the hospital who has told me that so long as I am maintaining my fluids then I have nothing to worry about but obviously I am worried as I'm sure that my baby can't be receiving very much nutritionally when my food is going straight through me and surely with severe IUGR she needs as much help as she can get?

I'd really appreciate a second opinion on this. Many thanks.

ANSWER

If you are still having trouble, I'd advise sports drinks or make your own: 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 3-4 Tablespoons sugar in a quart of water. This has both calories and will help stop the diarrhea.

Stress is not your friend right now, so if you can spend time each day in meditation, prayer, yoga, getting a massage, a warm bath, or whatever else relaxes you, that would be good for you and your baby.

But persistent diarrhea past 3 days might need some medical support to get it treated, so another call to your midwife might be in order.
