What Does NT of 3.6 Mean?

QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I had an ultrasound at 12 weeks and 6 days as part of the genetic screening. I also had blood work done but those numbers have not yet been plugged into the figures. The nuchal translucency was 3.6 and they said nasal bone present.

Anyhow based on the ultrasound alone the genetic counselor said that it could mean a genetic problem such as downs. I am 42 years old and already have 4 healthy children.. I told her to cancel the rest of the testing and that I would proceed to have an amnio instead. Is the NT she told me about really high? Am I at a high risk of having a genetically ill baby.

I have dreamt of a blue stroller so i think its a boy. I need your expert advice.

ANSWER

Hello,
Once the nuchal translucency has shown an increased risk factor, I believe it is prudent to move forward with the amniocentesis. The amniocentesis will give you a solid answer one way or another. You then can decide what to do, based on data that is basically full proof.

Hopefully your "son" will be healthy adding great joy to your already full family :)
