When Are You Supposed to Hear the Baby's Heartbeat?

QUESTION

Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I am 40 years old with 3 children already. I had a miscarriage almost a year ago, and now I'm 8 weeks pregnant.

I went last week to my ob-gyn and had the vaginal and the regular ultrasound but the Dr. couldn't find a heartbeat. Is this normal? Dr said that maybe is too early.

I haven't bleed or anything, but sometimes I feel like mild contractions, is that OK?

ANSWER

Hello, With a vaginal ultrasound, a heartbeat should be easily heard by 6 weeks. At 8 weeks a fetal pole that looks like a peanut with a good heartbeat should be very obvious. The only explanation for you is that your dates are off. This would explain the fact that the pregnancy did not measure 8 weeks.
