Why Would I Feel So Pregnant With Negative Tests?

QUESTION

Dear Ms Ultrasound,
I recently started feeling very pregnant. I have three other children so I know all the signs. I took several home pregnancy tests and the last one was positive. I went to the doctors because my tubes are tied. He did a pelvic exam and said my cervix shows the signs of being pregnant but my uterus is tipped so he could not feel it. He sent me for an ultrasound but they claim they do not see anything. I am waiting for the results of the blood test. What could be going on?

My cycle is like clockwork, but I have not had a period in 2 months. I have gained weight all in the stomach and hips. My breast are swollen, constipation, frequent urination, my taste buds are completely off, thing I like I don't like right now and vice versa. My husband does not believe any of the tests. He truly believes I am pregnant especially with my being so emotional over nothing. Can you please help explain what is going on? I am so worried that something is horribly wrong.

Thank you,
Myiesha

ANSWER

Hi Myiesha,
You don't say how old you are. What it sounds like to me, is classic peri-menopause! Does that fit into the picture? The blood test (HCG test) will determine if you are pregnant. If you are in the age group for early menopause, you can also have a blood test to determine if your hormone levels have dropped and you have entered into early menopause. This would explain your symptoms.
