Would Previous Gastic Bypass Inhibit Conception?

QUESTION

Dear Midwife,
I'm 2½ years out of gastric bypass surgery, plus I had a tummy tuck to remove excess skin after my weight loss. I recently got married, and at the age of 37, my doctor told me that if I planned on getting pregnant, not to wait due to my age and past medical history. Also, 3 months ago I was due for another Depo shot (which I had been taking for about a year) but I didn't take it because we had decided to try to conceive. So, now it's been 3 months since we have started trying and I'm getting worried! Should I be worried? Would my gastric bypass surgery hinder me from getting pregnant? Will it take longer than 3 months after a Depo shot? I still haven't seen a period, but I never have had regular periods either!

ANSWER

It can take up to a year to "recover" from Depo. If you want to speed up the process and get regular periods again, you might try oral contraceptives or the patch for a couple of months.
