Fertility and Conception Tips
Hoping to get pregnant soon? You've come to the right place! Here's everything you need to know to maximize your chances of conceiving quickly and to get your pregnancy off to the healthiest possible start.
Positive Self-Image in the Childbearing Years
Feeling good about yourself is the key to making the most of the childbearing year. A woman who feels good about herself will celebrate the changes that her body experiences during pregnancy, look forward to the challenge of giving birth, and willingly accept the physical and emotional changes of the postpartum period.
Home Pregnancy Tests and HcG
When a women becomes pregnant her body starts to produce a hormone called hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) This hormone give the positive result on both urine and blood based tests. hCG is produced by the embryo at implantation (when it starts to implant itself into the utering lining.) Implantation occurs 6-10 days after conception. As the embryo grows, the amount of hCG increases and doubles approximately every 2-3 days. The purpose of this hormone is to keep estrogen and progestone levels in proper balance until the placenta is adequately developed.
Fertility Testing
In 25 percent of cases, more than one factor causes infertility, and some causes are harder to detect than others. In 5 to 10 percent of cases, testing reveals no abnormalities at all; doctors characterize those patients as having unexplained infertility.
Preconception Checklist
The following checks or tests may be made by your doctor before making the decision of pregnancy, in order to ensure you will have as trouble-free a term as possible and good health for the growing baby.
Folic Acid
You should start taking folic acid prior to getting pregnant, even if you are not trying to conceive. Neural tube defects usually develop very early in pregnancy (18-30 days after conception), often before a women even knows that she is pregnant.
