Is Too Much Milk Aggravating Reflux?
QUESTION
Dear Lactation Consultant,
I'm nursing my 21-month-old along with my one-month-old. I've noticed that my milk lets down fast and furious. It seems like it's way too much for my newborn. How can I nurse her so that she's not choking on the milk? My 21-month-old certainly enjoys all of the milk, and I'm wondering if it's his nursing (twice daily) that's causing my milk to come in so fast. My daughter also has reflux, and I have the feeling that all of the milk is aggravating it (because her tummy fills up so fast). Do you think that's a possibility? Thanks,
GwenWill my baby outgrow gastroesophageal reflux?
A baby who spits up all the time...an adult with heartburn...a child who won't gain weight...an unhappy toddler...a chronic cough...wheezing...recurrent pneumonia...an infant who cries and cries...any one of these may be the only symptom of a common condition called gastroesophageal reflux.
Possible Causes of Failure to Thrive
Many infants regain their birth weights by one week of age. Most regain their birth weights by two weeks of age and have a steady weight gain thereafter. A child who has gone seven weeks without regaining her birth weight deserves a thorough work-up to determine the cause.
A Bun it the Oven, A Burn in the Chest
During a major bout of heartburn accompanied with acid reflux during my second pregnancy, I became pretty crafty about coming up with dinners that wouldn't leave my chest feeling like an open pit of lava. Read on and learn how you can eat well during pregnancy, without dying from heartburn.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Newborns
by damomma
When my newborn daughter Mary started having screaming fits at 7 weeks, everyone told me it was "colic". It was infuriating how quick people were to dismiss my mother's instinct that something was wrong. I was a new mother and she was a tiny newborn and this, they told me, is what newborns do.
