Dear Midwife,
What are the chances of a placental abruption in subsequent pregnancies? I had a severe placental abruption at 36 weeks with my third child. I am now 16 weeks pregnant and concerned that his might happen again.
I have no risk factors that would cause a placental abruption.
Nicotine patch OK for pregnant women -- Especially during third trimester, study shows. Women who just can't quit smoking during pregnancy can now safely turn to nicotine patches for help.
Since Caitlin's birth happened so fast, and so unexpectedly, there isn't really too much to tell, but I'll do my best to make it interesting. Her birth story actually began at our baby shower as I opened our last gift. I was crouched down to unwrap the present (It was one of those stroller/car seat combos -- we knew that ahead of time.
Throughout pregnancy a mucus plug blocks the opening to the cervix to prevent bacteria from entering. Before labor, this mucus plug is expelled so that the cervix can open to allow the baby to pass through to prepare for delivery.
Placental abruption is the separation of the placenta from the uterine lining. This condition usually occurs in the third trimester but can occur any time after the 20th week of pregnancy.
Normally the placenta separates from the uterus and is delivered right after the birth of the baby. When placental abruption occurs, the placenta starts to tear away from the uterus before the baby is born.
