We call our nipple ointment "all purpose" since it contains ingredients that help deal with multiple causes or aggravating factors of sore nipples. "Good medicine" calls for the single "right" treatment for the "right" problem, true enough, but mothers with sore nipples don't have time to try out different treatments that may or may not work, so we have combined various treatments in one ointment.
A plugged duct is a sore, tender lump or knotty area in the breast. It occurs when a milk duct is not draining well, and inflammation builds up. There are many reasons for these problems, but treatment is essentially the same.
Dear Lactation Consultant,
I just found out I am pregnant with my second child. I have a 10-month-old son who is happily breastfeeding and I don't want to have to stop. What kind of issues should I be concerned about for breastfeeding while pregnant and then breastfeeding a toddler and a newborn?
Dear Lactation Consultant,
I am 32 weeks pregnant with my second child. I would like to breast feed my baby but my nipples are exceptionally tender. I attempted to breast feed my first child but could only stand about 5 days. It was like driving nails through my nipples. Is there anything I can use to desensitize them now and after the baby's born?
My husband mentioned something about a lotion baseball pitcher's use to toughen up their hands and keep them from splitting and bleeding. Can I use something like that or will it effect my baby?
Try putting on some soothing music or having a cup of decaffeinated tea. The more you are able to relax, the easier let-down will occur. If you are experiencing pain that is preventing you from relaxing during nursing, see the section below on pain management.
Dear Lactation Consultant,
I am a mom of three with another baby on the way. I tried to breastfeed my second child but I had alot of problems. My nipples were cracked and bleeding before I even left the hospital. The nurses and consultants said that the baby was latching on correctly, and that it was because the baby had a very strong suckle. I used breast shells to ease the pain between feedings, I soaked my breasts in warm water before feedings to help with letdown, I massaged them, I tried nursing the baby in different positions -- nothing seemed to work.
It is important to get the best latch possible when you have sore nipples. Even if the cause of sore nipples is Candida, improving the latch can decrease the pain. Note that with the "ideal" latch, the baby covers more of the areola.
Perfect for relief when getting started breastfeeding! Loved these, they were a God send. They helped to heal cracked, bleeding nipples within about 25 hours time.
