D & C

  • Transvaginal Versus Transabdominal Ultrasound

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms. Ultrasound,
I went for my first prenatal appointment at 6w3d, based on LMP. The MD could not see as sac transvaginally, but did find one transabdominally, however there was no presence of a fetal pole or yolk sac. The doctor did not do any measurements, nor did she take a blood draw. A diagnosis of a blighted ovum was given and a referral for a D and C.

I understand that this is likely not a viable pregnancy, but what would cause a sac to be seen abdominally and not vaginally? I thought it would be the opposite at this early a stage?

  • Length of Cycle Changed After D&C

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
I had a D&C in November after I miscarried due to a blighted ovum at 8 weeks. My cycles prior had always been a 28 day cycle give or take a day without fail. Since my surgery I have had cycles of 34 days.

Is it normal for my body to have adjusted in this manner? I am TTC again, so I just want to make sure this is ok because it is terribly frustrating.

  • Blighted Ovum

    QUESTION

    Dear Ultrasound Expert,
I recently was diagnosed with blighted ovum. I am confused and disturbed. I went in to my OB excited about the possibility of being pregnant. I was approximately 6 weeks at that time. I was seen that day and an U/S was done. The technician advised that there was no baby yet but it was still very early. I was rescheduled for a second two weeks later.

    Dear Midwife,

  • Previous Aneuploidy Pregnancy and Worried

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
I had an aneuploidy pregnancy and at my 8 week scan revealed a fetus at 6 weeks 3 days. It had died by the next scan at 10 weeks and I had a D&C to remove it as I wasn't miscarrying at all. Then I waited for my period 6 weeks later -- had intercourse 14 days after that and have fallen pregnant again.

  • What Does This Mean About the Ovaries?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
I got copies of my ultrasound report from the doctor and in this report the doctor says:"Large gestional sac of about 23mm containing at 5mm embroyo with no cardic activity. Ovaries are difficult to discreetly identify but there is no evidence of adnexal mass on either side.

"What does this mean about the ovaries?

  • Could the Ultrasound be Wrong?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
Hello. I am dreadfully worried. 2 weeks ago today, I was sent in by my doctor for an ultrasound to determine heartbeat of my baby. I was about 11 weeks pregnant and the previous evening my doctor couldn't pick up the baby's heartbeat on the hand held ultrasound in his office.

  • Should I Have Another Ultrasound to Confirm Doctors Diagnosis?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
At the beginning of my seventh week I had a transvaginal ultrasound and although everything appeared normal -- the size of the fetus was normal and all the surroundings were good, etc. -- there was no fetal heartbeat.

The doctor told me that I would not need a D&C and that I was going to have a natural miscarriage. How long will this procedure take? Could I have miscalculated the weeks? I am not sure if I stopped the pregnancy signs or am I imagining. What should I expect? Should I have another ultrasound?

  • Were There Ever Any Babies?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
Last week I had a D&C following a "missed miscarriage". I found out I was pregnant at 5-6 weeks, but because I had had several weeks of light bleeding and constant brownish discharge they sent me for an early ultrasound. It was dated 5+ weeks and showed 2 gestational sacs (no heartbeats) - both with good decidual reactions.

3 days later I started to bleed again and another u/s showed one of the sacs collapsing, the other still had a good decidual reaction.
