Newly Pregnant and New Fitness Routine

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
I am overweight and I started a fitness routine a few weeks before I found out I was pregnant. I have heard people say you can continue a fitness routine that your body was use to. My body wasn't use to any exercise!

Can I continue working out or do I need to take it easy? I am really concerned about gaining more weight, and want to get my body in better shape.

Should I Ignore Hunger Pangs?

Dear Fitness Expert,
I am 8 weeks pregnant and find that I am hungry all the time (or nauseous). I have a good, balanced diet and think that I am eating enough. I do not want to put on more weight during pregnancy than I need to as I tend to gain weight quite easily.

Is is OK to ignore hunger pangs? Or are these a cue that my body needs a bit more? I am normally very active (I ski, run, weight train, swim, cycle, etc.) but have cut down my activity a bit so am worried that this will also contribute to an unhealthy weight gain.

Strained Intercostal Muscles and Pregnant

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
It seems I have badly strained my intercostal muscles on my right side. The soreness and pain can be pretty excruciating at times particularly when sneezing (felt an actual pop in that area tonight), coughing, and when swimming (I had to give up my 8 miles/week when I had pain when breathing). I want to get back to it slowly but this pain will not subside at all. Each sneeze makes it worse and sleeping stiffens me up.

Fitness During a High Risk Pregnancy

QUESTION

Dear Fitness Expert,
I am about six to seven weeks pregnant. I am experiencing bleeding though my doctor says my baby is ok. But because of the continuous bleeding, she asked me to stop all my workouts. Though I was not professional athlete before pregnancy, I was swimming and weight training about 5 times a week. I feel a bit depressed that I am not able to work out.
