Second Trimester

  • Wonderful Dream Experience!

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
After 20 years of friendship my friend Leona honored me with a request to be in the delivery room for the birth of her second child. While she and her husband decided to find out the sex of their first-born, (a son), they decided against finding out the sex of their second.

When Leona was about 24 weeks along, I received the good news that I, too, was expecting my second.

Time passed and soon it was close to Leona's due date and I was anxiously awaiting the call to come for the birth.

  • Can you Make a Guess?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
Hi. I'm 21 weeks pregnant and I really want a girl. I've had so many weird dreams. The first was about someone taking my baby girl. The second was about twin black boys who were like the little kids in Africa who are very sick -- you know the ones that are really skinny with huge bellies. It was weird because I'm white and my boyfriend is black. The third dream was about a young girl who had a baby girl. I was there helping her deliver the baby when an old friend of mine came to see the baby. The baby started to cry hysterically and then I woke up.

  • Depression During Pregnancy

    QUESTION

    Dear Experts,
I need some help and I don't know where else to turn. I am 20 weeks pregnant with my first child at age 35 and feel I may have become seriously depressed. I first mentioned this to my OB at about week 8 and he basically blew me off. In all fairness though, it's a group practice and you don't really get to know any of the physicians very well.

  • Calcification in a Fetal Heart?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
In your twenty years experience have you ever seen a calcium deposit in the baby's heart? I am so worried and have no answers from my doctor yet. I had an amnio and the baby looked fine the doctor said but he did tell me about the calcium deposit like it was no big deal. Now I have to wait two weeks for the test results from the amnio to come back from the lab. Please let me know if you have ever seen one of these before?

    Thank you.

  • Restarting Tai-Bo Program During Pregnancy

    QUESTION

    Dear Fitness Expert,
I've seen many questions and answers about Kickboxing, but nothing specifically about Tai-Bo (you know, the one with Billy Blanks). I have done Tai-Bo off and on for 5 years and I'd say I'm moderately active. Would it be OK to start up my Tai-Bo program now at 4 months as long as I watch heart rate, temperature and drink plenty of water?

    Thanks!

  • Tuberculosis Testing During Pregnancy

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
I am about 3 months pregnant and have not yet been in to see a doctor because I have no insurance. I have just accepted a position as a preschool teacher and they asked that I have a TB test done. I have tried to contact Ob/Gyn offices for an answer but no one will give me info because I'm not their patient. I was wondering if I can get a TB test done while I am pregnant. Thank you for your help.

  • Showing

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
What determines when a woman will start 'showing'? weight, height, genetics, water retention, none of the above? My sister is 15 weeks pregnant and is not showing at all; meanwhile I'm 12 weeks and am really showing. She's much more slender then I am, weighing about 15-20 lbs less (same height though). Just curious on why this is.

    Thanks,
    JKoestler

  • Should I Be Worried?

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
I am 21 weeks pregnant, and am only 18, so am very cautious and worried about everything. I was told that you are supposed to feel your baby move alot by now, to the point where it's even little kicks. I haven't felt a thing that I can accept as baby movement. Am I just not perceptive enough to this? Or is he really not kicking me?

  • What is Amniotic Band Syndrome?

    QUESTION

    Dear Ms Ultrasound,
I had an ultrasound just this week at 19 weeks. The results all came back fine -- no baby abnormalities -- which is great. There was something yet to be determined; there was a little "thing" which the doctor said could either have been another baby that didn't form or a small amniotic band. They reassured me yesterday that the baby was fine and that this wouldn't affect the baby. But then why when I look on the Internet it says that the bands cause abnormalities. What should I think?

  • Terrible Headaches

    QUESTION

    Dear Nutritionist,
Hello, I am 25 weeks pregnant and have terrible headaches usually daily. I had them in my first trimester, but they have gotten much worse. Usually they are there when I wake up in the morning and last all day, but sometimes they don't start until around noon.

I have been on bed rest for the past 6 weeks and will have to be on it until the baby arrives.

I drink plenty of water 8-10 glasses a day. I have always drank a minimum of 8 glasses a day. Could I be needing more than that because I am accustomed to drinking that much?
