  • Is a Homebirth Safe With Vaginal Varicose Veins?

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
I'm trying to get a few "second opinions" on my situation. I just found out the intense pain I'm having is from vaginal varicose veins. I've been complaining that everything feels like it is just going to "fall out" but everyone passed it off to hemorrhoids (even though I had no discomfort associated with that) and now my whole vaginal area is swollen and the pain is getting worse each day, especially now that I'm 7 months pregnant. I'm using Prep. H cream, putting my feet up, exercising, etc. and still each new day is worse than before.

  • What Should I Do Differently To Make Breastfeeding Work?

    QUESTION

    Dear Lactation Consultant,
I am a mom of three with another baby on the way. I tried to breastfeed my second child but I had alot of problems. My nipples were cracked and bleeding before I even left the hospital. The nurses and consultants said that the baby was latching on correctly, and that it was because the baby had a very strong suckle. I used breast shells to ease the pain between feedings, I soaked my breasts in warm water before feedings to help with letdown, I massaged them, I tried nursing the baby in different positions -- nothing seemed to work.

  • What Precautions to Continue Kickboxing?

    QUESTION

    Dear Fitness Expert,
I do kickboxing and have done so off and on for approximately 9 years. I stopped during my first pregnancy which resulted in a cesarean 4 years ago.

I am now 11 weeks pregnant and continue to kickbox on a one-to-one basis at a lower intensity.

My concern is as I get into my pregnancy and continue to engage in kickboxing how it will impinge on my existing c-section scar and what precautions I would need to take?

  • Can I Check My cervix For Dilation?

    QUESTION

    Dear Midwife,
Hello! I am currently 34 weeks pregnant. I have had braxton hicks now for several weeks, but they are still irregular.I had my son at 36 weeks by c-section and was wondering if my body will treat this pregnancy like a first-time baby since I only dilated to a fingertip with my son before the c-section or will it go more rapidly than the first?

Also, is there a way to check your own cervix for dilation?

  • Is a Doula for Me?

The word doula is a Greek word that means "Women's Servant." Women have been serving other women in childbirth for centuries and have proven that this support from another woman has positive effects on the labor process. When a doula was present, women were less likely to have pain relief medications administered, less likely to have a cesarean birth, and reported having a more positive childbirth experience.

  • Can I Get Rid of This ''Mother's Apron''?

    QUESTION

    Dear Fitness Expert,
I have a question on toning up your stomach after a c-section. I have had 3 c-sections and I have what I have heard a lot of c-section mothers refer to the 'belly flap'. Below my incision scar is thin but my stomach over the incision is my problem area. I have lost weight and toned up all over my body but nothing seems to get rid of this flap. My stomach actually hangs over the incision scar reminding me of a beer belly that hangs over a belt.
